23.03.2023, Research :

Prof. Dr. Mario Pfannstiel, Professor at the Faculty of Health Management at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU), traveled to Perth, Australia, at the beginning of March to give lectures on the topic of "Innovation through Healthcare Service Design". There, he lectured both at Edith Cowan University (ECU) and at the Ministry of Health.

On March 08, Prof. Mario Pfannstiel visited ECU in Perth, where he gave a lecture entitled "Foundations and Best Practices in Healthcare Service Design" as part of a lecture in the subject "Service & Transformation Design". In his lecture, he presented basic approaches and procedures for service design in healthcare and explained them with examples. Afterwards, the students and staff of the faculty took the opportunity to ask questions about the understanding and the examples shown.

Prof. Pfannstiel has been working with the design team around Associate Professor Dr. Christopher Kueh, who works at ECU, for several years. In the past, Australian lecturers have been guests at HNU for guest lectures in the master's program in Digital Healthcare Management; a more in-depth collaboration has been agreed for the next two years.

"Healthcare Service Design and its Impact on Innovation" at the Ministry of Health

At the invitation of the innovation team of the Department of Health in the state of Western Australia, Prof. Pfannstiel gave another lecture on "Healthcare Service Design and its Impact on Innovation" the following day. The lecture was broadcast live to other branches outside the ministry to allow for a subsequent technical discussion between scientists.

The innovation team was particularly interested in examples of how a well-designed healthcare service can have a significant impact on innovation and how early-stage innovations can be funded based on success. Prof. Pfannstiel presented numerous solutions using the example of recent advances and developments in human-centered design of intravenous infusion systems where patients are at the center of healthcare delivery – insights that will also benefit students in HNU's Digital Healthcare Management master's program.

Cooperation with Edith Cowan University: joint publications and projects

The cooperation between Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia and the Faculty of Health Care Management at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences has existed for two and a half years. Joint publication projects are being worked on; including the book "Service Design Practices for Healthcare Innovation", published in 2022, and the book "Human-Centered Service Design for Healthcare Transformation", published in early 2023. Currently, master's students, doctoral students, and researchers from both universities are working on a joint book on "Service Design, Creativity and Innovation in Healthcare." The publication is expected to be published in English by Springer Verlag in 2024 with the participation of many international scientists, practitioners and experts.
