How does the application procedure work?
How you have to apply depends on the degree programme you are applying for and on your university entrance qualification.
These procedures currently exist for the degree programmes:
- Application for admission-free Bachelor programmes
- Application for locally restricted Bachelor programmes
- Application for Master programmes
Important!
The described procedures apply to prospective students with a university entrance qualification entitling them to study at a university of applied sciences in Bavaria or, in the case of applications for Master's degree courses, with a successfully completed Bachelor's degree.
If you are not sure whether this is the case for you, you should inform yourself separately.
Application for admission-free Bachelor programmes
1
Within the application period, you register on the application portal of the HNU (opens in a new window).
Even if you are applying for several courses at the HNU, you only need to register once.
If you have already applied for another semester in the past, you have to register again. After each application procedure all applicant data will be deleted.
2
You select the degree programmes for which you wish to apply and complete the relevant online forms.
3
Once you have completed everything, an application for admission will be generated in the portal for each degree programme you have chosen. You print out this application/these applications and sign them.
4
Now the application and all other required documents must arrive in hard copy at the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences by the end of the application deadline.
These other documents must be included in any case:
- Your diploma (or other proof of your university entrance qualification)
a simple copy is sufficient, a certification is not necessary - a gap-free curriculum vitae
here you do not have to impress us, we just need to be able to track your educational and professional development on a monthly basis
You may be required to submit additional documents, such as certificates of traineeships, professional training or proof of volunteer work or military service.
- Your diploma (or other proof of your university entrance qualification)
5
Now the university will check your documents. If everything fits, you will receive an admission offer in the form of the notification of admission in the application portal.
In the notification of admission you will also find information on when you can enrol at the earliest and by when you must have enrolled at the latest.
6
As soon as the time has come when enrolment is possible, you can apply for enrolment in the applicant portal for your desired degree programme.
To do so, please fill out the corresponding online form. The applicant portal then generates the application for enrolment. You print it out and sign it.
7
The application for enrolment must be received by the university by the end of the enrolment period (the exact date can be found in the notification of admission). Together with the application you also have to submit some other documents. All the necessary documents for enrolment are listed in the letter of admission. These are usually:
- a copy of your identity card (front and back) or passport
- Your health insurance certificate
1 certificate + 2 notifications; see information sheet on student health insurance - a receipt for the payment of the matriculation fee
e.g. a screenshot from online banking or a copy of the bank statement. A copy of the completed money transfer form is not sufficient.
If the course of studies requires a pre-study internship:
- Proof of the pre-study internship
If your pre-study internship is still running at that time, we need a certificate that it is running and when you are expected to complete it.
You will also need to upload a passport photo.
8
Application for locally restricted Bachelor programmes
1
The first step is to register with hochschulstart.de (opens in a new window)
In the course of the registration you will receive a BID and a BAN number. Keep them safe - you will need them in the next step.
If you have already registered at hochschulstart.de, your login data will still be valid. So please remember them well.
Why hochschulstart.de? Because the central coordination of applications for degree programmes with restricted admission minimises the number of unused study places.
2
With this BID and BAN number, you register on the HNU application portal (opens in a new window) within the application period.
Even if you are applying for several courses at HNU, you only need to register once.
If you have already applied for another semester in the past, you have to register again. After each application procedure all applicant data will be deleted.
3
You select the degree programmes for which you wish to apply and complete the relevant online forms.
4
Once you have completed everything, an application for admission will be generated in the portal for each degree programme you have chosen. You print out this request(s) and sign it/them.
From this moment on, you can also view and prioritise the selected study programmes on hochschulstart.de.
Please be sure to observe the regulations on prioritisation and automatic study place allocation on hochschulstart.de (opens in a new window)!
5
Now the application and all other required documents must arrive in paper form at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences by the end of the application deadline.
In any case, the other documents include
- Your diploma (or other proof of your university entrance qualification)
a simple copy is sufficient, a certification is not necessary - a gap-free curriculum vitae
here you don't have to impress us, we just need to be able to track your educational and professional development on a monthly basis
You may be required to submit additional documents, such as certificates of traineeships, professional training or services rendered.
- Your diploma (or other proof of your university entrance qualification)
6
Now the university checks your documents.
If everything fits, take part in the selection process. After the application deadline, all valid applications will be distributed among the available study places according to certain rules (e.g. according to grade, but also with quotas for criteria such as waiting time or "Study without A Level" ...).
The HNU reports the study place offers to hochschulstart.de and there you can then accept the offers within certain deadlines or the study places will be automatically allocated to you based on your prioritisation.
Important:
- Please be sure to observe the regulations on prioritisation and the automatic allocation of study places on hochschulstart.de!
- Once you have accepted a study place offer on hochschulstart.de or you have been awarded a study place due to the automated allocation process, your remaining applications on hochschulstart.de are irretrievably forfeited!
Because the allocation of study places is a very dynamic process, your status may change from day to day.
7
As soon as you have accepted a study place offer via hochschulstart.de or a study place has been assigned to you, you can apply for enrolment in the HNU application portal for this degree programme.
To do so, please fill in the corresponding online form. The applicant portal will then generate the enrollment request for you. You print it out and sign it.
8
The application for enrolment must be received by the university by the end of the enrolment period (the exact date can be found in the notification of admission). Together with the application you also have to submit some other documents. All the necessary documents for enrolment are listed in the letter of admission. These are usually:
- a copy of your identity card (front and back) or passport
- Your health insurance certificate
1 certificate + 2 notifications; see information sheet on student health insurance - a receipt for the payment of the matriculation fee
e.g. a screenshot from online banking or a copy of the bank statement. A copy of the completed remittance slip is not sufficient.
Falls der Studiengang ein Vorpraktikum erfordert:
If the degree programme requires a pre-internship:- Proof of pre-internship.
If your pre-internship is ongoing at the time, then we will need a certificate stating that it is ongoing and when you expect to complete it.
You also need to upload a passport photo.
9
When we have checked your documents and everything is correct, you will be informed by e-mail that you are enrolled and you will receive your CampusCard (=student ID) and your login data for the portals relevant to your studies by post.

Application for postgraduate studies
You can find out how to apply for a part-time continuing education course on the website of the respective course or certificate course.
What should I pay attention to when applying?
How strict are the deadlines?
Very strict.
The deadlines are cut-off dates. All applications that arrive at the university after the deadline will not be considered. So please make sure that you meet the deadlines and upload all the documents.
The date of receipt online at the university is decisive for the deadline.
All the necessary documents must be available by the end of the deadline. You cannot send anything after the deadline. The university is not obliged and, due to the large number of applicants, not in a position to draw your attention to errors or missing documents.
You can find the application deadlines here.
The matriculation deadline is stated in the notification of admission.
Can I apply for several courses of study at the same time?
Of course! You will not suffer any disadvantage in the process.
You can apply for many courses of study, but if you have more than one place after completing the application process, you will have to choose one.
We even advise you not to put all your eggs in one basket and to reduce the risk of being left without a place by applying several times.
I have been offered admission from the HNU before. Do I still have to apply again?
Yes, absolutely!
The offers are always only valid for the semester for which you have applied.
There is a special rule for programs with restricted admission:
If you have accepted a place at the HNU in the past, but were unable to enroll due to federal voluntary service, voluntary military service, FSJ or similar. In this case, you should keep a good record of your letter of admission. If you enclose it when you reapply for the program, you will have a secure place to study. But you still have to apply!
Will I have a disadvantage later if I receive an offer of admission from the HNU but do not accept it?
No.
Each application and admission procedure stands on its own. At the next application deadline, each procedure starts fresh from the beginning.
What happens with my application documents after the application?
If you are enrolled at the HNU, the application documents will become part of your student file. If you do not enroll, the documents will be deleted after the application process is completed.
I haven't got my school report yet. When can I hand it in later?
If you receive your Abitur and/or Fachhochschulreifezeugnis in the current year (certificate date), you can submit it to the Office of Student Affairs by July 27 of the respective year when applying for the winter semester.
For applications for the summer semester, you must submit all documents by the end of the application deadline.
Sometimes application deadlines are extended. If your certificate date is then covered by the extended deadline, you can apply. If application deadlines are extended, you can find out about it on our homepage.
I get my diploma very late. What do I enter for the grade point average and the date of the report if I am already applying online?
Simply leave the corresponding fields blank or enter an expected value.
If you then submit your certificate later (important: observe deadlines!), we will add or correct the data based on the information in the certificate.
For my studies I need a pre-study internship. Do I have to complete it by the application deadline?
No.
The pre-study internship must be completed by the start of the lecture.
You can also apply without a completed pre-study internship. In order to enrol, you must then submit proof that you have completed a corresponding pre-study internship or that you are currently in a pre-study internship that will be completed by the start of lectures.
The academic calendar will tell you when lectures start.
You can find more information about the pre-study internship on the page of the respective degree programme.
I am abroad during the application or enrolment period - what do I have to consider?
The application and enrolment process can be done online.
Can I study at the HNU with my school leaving certificate?
Is the Fachhochschulreife without final examination ("Schulabbrecher-FHR") valid at the HNU?
No.
If you have acquired your Fachhochschulreife by attending the upper secondary school (school-based part) and corresponding practice (subject-related/occupation-related part), then this type of Fachhochschulreife is not valid in Bavaria and Saxony.
But there are exceptions: You can study the courses of study which we offer as cooperative courses of study together with the Technical University of Ulm.
Can I study at the HNU with a Fachhochschulreife from a two-year vocational college in Baden-Württemberg?
No - but.
This type of Fachhochschulreife is only valid in Baden-Württemberg. But...
... You can study the courses of study that we offer as cooperative courses of study together with the Technical University of Ulm.
... You can obtain a nationwide valid entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied sciences by providing proof of completed vocational training.
... You can obtain a Fachhochschulreife (entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied sciences), which is also valid outside of Baden-Württemberg, by providing proof of sufficient practical experience (so-called recognition internship).
Recognition internship
- at least half a year
- guided internship
- Activity in the subject area of your vocational school (will be examined & certified by the vocational school)
- The internship must be completed and the letter of recognition from your vocational college must be submitted by the application deadline
I have my A-levels from a vocational high school (e.g. technical high school or commercial high school). Is that a problem?
As a rule, no. Normally you will also acquire the general qualification for university entrance at a vocational grammar school.
If in doubt, take a look at your certificate; it states which university entrance qualification your degree confers.
Is my International Baccalaureate (IB) valid?
Whether the IB qualifies as a university entrance qualification at the HNU is examined individually in each case.
- If you have obtained your IB at a school in Germany, the HNU will examine your degree as part of your application.
- If you obtained your IB at a school abroad, you must have your degree checked by uni-assist. Please register at the same time as you apply from the HNU at www.uni-assist.de and submit your documents there as well.
Are you sure I can get a place at university?
If you meet the admission requirements of the respective programme, the further allocation procedure depends on whether the programme is open or restricted.
You can also find out which admission mode applies to your desired degree program on the program's website.
Which study programmes have restricted admission? Which ones do not require admission?
Degree programmes with restricted admission
- International Corporate Communication and Media Management
- Master of Advanced Management
- Game-Production and Management
- Physician Assistant
- Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen
- Wirtschaftspsychologie
approval-free degree programmes
- Betriebswirtschaft
- Betriebswirtschaft im Gesundheitswesen
- Data Science Management
- Digital Enterprise Management
- Digitales Medizin- und Pflegemanagement
- Information Management Automotive
- Informationsmanagement und Unternehmenskommunikation
- Strategic Information Management
- Management für Gesundheits- und Pflegeberufe
- Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics
- MBA Führung und Management im Gesundheitswesen
- MBA General Management
- MBA Digital Leadership und IT-Management
What does "approval-free" mean?
You will definitely get a place in a programme without restricted admission if you
- meet the admission requirements* and
- register/apply “in due form and time.”
“In due form” means that you register using the designated means and forms (i.e. not via email, for instance) and that all of your supporting documents are complete by the registration deadline.
“In due time” means that all of your documents must have been received by HNU by the respective deadline for registration.
Your marks are not relevant for admission.* There is no selection process, nor is there a numerus clausus.
Please note: receiving an admission notification following your registration does not mean that you are enrolled at HNU. In order to actually study at HNU, the next step is to enrol within the stipulated enrolment period.
* Attention applicants for Master's programs: Even if the program has no restrictions on admission, your grade usually plays a role - namely as part of the admission requirements.
What does "(locally) restricted" mean?
"Restricted admission" means that only a certain number of students can be admitted to this programme each semester. This is referred to as the "capacity," and it is defined in the Admission Capacity Statutes. If the number of valid applications submitted within an application period exceeds the number of available places, applicants are ranked according to certain criteria (generally transcript marks; waiting time also factors in) and admitted in the resulting order.
What is the "Numerus Clausus" (NC)?
The poorest grade that was sufficient for admission in a restricted admission procedure is the so-called "Numerus Clausus" (NC). Here you will find an overview of the NC of past procedures (if there was an NC) for the respective study program.
The NC is never determined before the application procedure, but always results after the entire admission procedure has been completed. Therefore, the values of past years can only serve as a guide for a rough estimate of the chances of admission. The NC can vary from procedure to procedure, depending on the number of available study places and the quantity and final grades of the applicants.
In some cases, the NC for the group of graduates of technical (FOS) and vocational high schools (BOS) differs from that for all other groups of graduates. This is due to the fact that admission law stipulates that study places must be allocated on a pro rata basis. If, for example, 30% of the applicants have an FOS or BOS degree, 30% of the study places are also allocated to people with an FOS or BOS degree.
Can I improve my odds of being admitted?
In the case of programs with local admission restrictions, other criteria in addition to the average grade are used for the allocation of study places. These are for example:
Waiting periods: To a certain extent, periods during which you did not study after obtaining your entry qualification for higer education can improve your chances. The waiting poeriod is taken from the application documents and automatically taken into account. You do not have to do anything else for this.
Special quotas: A certain percentage of the study places to be awarded are earmarked for certain applicant groups (e.g. "study without Abi", second-degree students or foreign students). They then compete only within this group.
Only for the study program "Physician Assistant": A completed vocational training in a recognized health or nursing profession improves your admission grade. In the case of an education grade of "very good" by a whole grade, in the case of "good" by 0.7 grade points, in the case of "satisfactory" by 0.5, in the case of "sufficient" by 0.3.
