International Summer School at HNU: Insights into Modern Production and Logistics Systems

12.05.2026, Study:

How are complex products manufactured? How do production and logistics interact in this process? An international summer school at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) addressed these key questions. As part of “Industry Immersion Week,” students analyzed real-world value streams in manufacturing companies, gaining insights into industrial practices and opportunities for optimization.

A total of 15 students from Germany and South Africa participated in this intensive course. Under the academic guidance of Prof. Dr. Martin Stirzel and Joerg-Oliver Vogt, they were first introduced to methods based on the Toyota Production System. The goal was to develop a solid understanding of efficient production processes and to apply this knowledge directly in practice.

Practical Analyses at Leading Industrial Companies

Armed with methodological know-how, the international group visited several renowned companies in the region. On-site, the students analyzed production processes and documented value streams directly within the industrial environment. In doing so, they were able not only to apply theoretical concepts but also to experience the complexity of real-world processes.

The insights revealed that many of the companies visited already operate at a very high level of efficiency. At the same time, the participants identified specific areas for further optimization. Based on this, they developed their own ideas and suggestions for improvement.

International Exchange and the “Train the Trainer” Approach

In addition to academic work, the summer school also focused on intercultural exchange. The collaboration between German and South African students fostered diverse perspectives and approaches to complex problems.

At the same time, the practice-oriented teaching format served as a best-practice example of the “Train the Trainer” approach within the framework of the parallel DAAD project DLSE. Innovative didactic concepts were taught, aimed at sustainably transferring knowledge and strengthening international educational cooperation.

Strong Partners from Industry and Academia

The following companies participated and provided students with these valuable insights: Mercedes-Benz Buses Neu-Ulm, Airbus Helicopters GmbH Donauwörth, Audi AG Ingolstadt, Einstein Motorsport Ulm, and Bosch Rexroth Ulm.
