HNU workshop at the Digitalisation User Days: 3D printing to tackle bottlenecks and production stoppages

15.07.2026, Transfer:

Prof. Dr Oliver Kunze from Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) demonstrated how companies can use 3D printing to minimise production downtime, overcome supply bottlenecks and implement bespoke solutions more quickly at the ‘Digitalisation 2026’ User Days held at Roggenburg Abbey. His workshop, ‘Solving bottlenecks, downtime and special requirements in production with 3D printing’, was part of the event day ‘Next Level Workflows: Rethinking Processes’ and met with great interest from participants from the business world and industry.

During the workshop, Kunze began by providing an overview of the current additive manufacturing (AM) processes. Various technologies were presented, including Material Extrusion (MEX), Material Jetting (MJT), Directed Energy Deposition (DED), Powder Bed Fusion (PBF), Binder Jetting (BJT), Sheet Lamination (SHL) and Vat Photopolymerisation (VPP).

It became clear that additive manufacturing technologies have long since moved beyond prototyping and are increasingly being used as a strategic tool for flexible and resilient production processes.

Practical examples of greater flexibility in production

Using specific industrial case studies, Prof. Dr Kunze demonstrated how additively manufactured components can help to overcome production and supply bottlenecks. In the spare parts supply chain in particular, 3D printing opens up new possibilities for reducing lead times and avoiding costly production downtime.

In addition, application scenarios were presented in which companies can implement bespoke solutions cost-effectively and promptly. The technology makes it possible to respond quickly to specific requirements or unexpected challenges in production.

Successful introduction of new technologies

Exchange between academia and professional practice

A particular highlight of the workshop was the in-depth exchange of experiences between the participants. Representatives from various companies discussed their challenges and areas of application, and exchanged views on the opportunities and limitations of industrial 3D printing.

The ‘Digitalisation User Days’ organised by the Ulm | Alb-Donau | Biberach | Neu-Ulm Digitalisation Centre took place from 7 to 9 July 2026 at the Kloster Roggenburg Education Centre. This free event brings together experts from business, academia and industry, providing the latest insights into digitalisation, artificial intelligence, IT security and process innovation.
