Study with child

Having a child is first of all a great joy!

However, reconciling pregnancy and child rearing with the challenges of studying also requires stamina and organisational skills. You will have to cope with a variety of tasks between childcare, desk, household, lectures and possibly additional employment.
On the other hand, the period of study can be a favourable biographical time window for parenthood and starting a family. After all, if you have completed your studies with a child, your child/children may already be in kindergarten or school. These are good conditions for a successful start to your professional life!
You can find all the important information on the subject of "studying with a child" from A for unemployment benefit, B for Bafög, E for parental leave, K for child support or U for holiday semester here or at BIZEPS.

Holiday semester

Students with children can take examinations during a semester of leave of absence (first and repeat attempts) and thus extend their studies. In line with the regulations in professional life, you are entitled to a total of 6 semesters of leave of absence due to bringing up your children. All further information can be found here

Parental leave and parental allowance during studies

Parental leave and parental allowance during studies

As a student mother or father, you are of course also entitled to parental leave (as well as the minimum monthly parental allowance of 300.) Analogous to working life, where you are entitled to 3 years of parental leave, you are entitled to 6 semesters of leave, which you can take during your pregnancy, but also during your studies.
The good thing about it is that you can even take your first exams or repeat exams during a semester of leave - but you don't have to. The catch: If you finance your studies with BAföG, you will unfortunately lose your entitlement to it during a semester of leave of absence.

Family-friendly infrastructure

Family-friendly infrastructure

Because studying with a child is challenging enough, of the HNU tries to make life on campus as easy as possible for you: From a parent-child office, a mobile play corner, high chairs in the cafeteria (free food for students' children!), the children's reading corner in the library to the nursing and nappy-changing room in the basement of building A, there is really a lot of family-friendly infrastructure at the HNU.

Childcare in the "Kinderinsel Neu-Ulm - 3 large daycare centres under one roof"

Kinderinsel Neu-Ulm

To ensure that the continuation of your studies is not delayed by waiting for a place in a day care centre, the HNU has initiated a childcare facility. Here the children are looked after by students, but also by employees and teachers. Places are allocated via BIZEPS, where you can also find out about the three large day care centres.

Compendium Study with child

Compendium Study with Child

We have put together a compendium (opens in a new window) (in German) for you, with everything worth knowing from A to Z about your studies with a child. In particular, it covers legal issues and how to finance your studies with a child.

Maternity leave - also for pregnant and nursing students

Maternity leave for pregnant and breastfeeding students

Since 1.1.2018, the Maternity Protection Act (MuSchG (opens in a new window)) also applies to you as a pregnant or breastfeeding student. The leaflet (opens in a new window) published by the Deutsches Studierendenwerk explains what protection you are entitled to and that you should not suffer any disadvantages in your studies as a result of your pregnancy. However, you must report your pregnancy with the Admissions and Examination Office.
