Thinking about sustainable transformation and digitalisation together: HNU launches the "TwinForward South" project

04.02.2026, Press Release :

Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) is strengthening its role as a driving force for future-oriented continuing education and regional knowledge transfer: With the "TwinForward Süd" project, the Centre for Continuing Education (ZfW) at HNU is developing an innovative university certificate for engineers and technical practitioners in management-oriented solution approaches as part of the digital. ING II funding programme. The aim is to provide targeted support to companies in the region with their twin transformation, i.e. digital and sustainable transformation. HNU President Prof. Dr. Uta M. Feser thus underlines the strategic importance of academic continuing education for regional transformation.

Bavaria's Minister of Science Markus Blume congratulates the new continuing education programme: “Digitalisation and artificial intelligence are the mega-topics of our time – this makes lifelong learning more important than ever. The Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences, as a highly innovative think tank, is a strong partner in this endeavour. With the digital.ING II programme as the driving force behind continuing education, we are preparing skilled workers in companies for AI and related technologies. Knowledge transfer is an economic turbocharger. We are strengthening our competitiveness so that money is not earned elsewhere in the digital world. In this way, digital.ING II is making a direct contribution to our future. Congratulations and many thanks to Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences. TwinForward Süd is a smart continuing education programme with real added value.”

Focus on university certificate in twin transformation

The project focuses on developing a part-time university certificate in twin transformation, which imparts practical knowledge on sustainability management, the circular economy and digital technologies. Participants learn how digital solutions can be used strategically to successfully implement sustainable and circular business models.

Qualification for sustainable and digital value creation

"With TwinForward South, we are addressing the specific training needs of regional companies and combining scientific expertise with application-oriented continuing education," says Prof. Dr. Jens Kolb, HNU Vice President for Transfer and Continuing Education. "In this way, we are creating sustainable added value for the economy and society." Tassilo Schuster, Research Professor for Sustainable Business Models and Global Value Creation Networks, also emphasises the strategic importance of the project: “Strengthening resource-efficient and digitally supported value creation is of central importance, especially for an export-oriented economy like Germany. With the university certificate, we are providing a targeted impetus to prepare engineers and technical practitioners in the region for the requirements of the twin transformation and thus ensure the long-term competitiveness of companies.”

Broad partner network supports the project

The project is being implemented by the HNU Centre for Continuing Education in close cooperation with the Sales and Sustainable Business Institute (SSBI) and the Institute for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainability (IfE), as well as the Technology Transfer Centres (TTCs) in Leipheim and Günzburg. In addition, a regional transfer network is being established to promote continuous exchange between the university, companies and relevant associations. Right from the start of the project, TwinForward South has been very well received by the regional business community. Several companies are actively involved in shaping the content of the certificate.

Funding from digital.ING II strengthens continuing education initiative

TwinForward Süd is being funded as part of the second funding round of digital.ING II, a joint programme of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (StmWK) and the Bavarian Industry Association (vbw). The aim of the programme is to develop sustainable continuing education programmes in the fields of digitalisation and engineering and to anchor them firmly in the higher education landscape. With TwinForward Süd, HNU is underlining its commitment to actively shaping lifelong learning and acting as a reliable partner for the transformation of the regional economy.
