First-hand practical knowledge: In lectures by TZB experts, the students learned more about weaning – the gradual process of weaning patients off mechanical ventilation – as well as about neurorehabilitation. In addition, they observed the procedures in the intermediate care unit (IMC) and the intensive care unit (ICU). A particular highlight was the presentation of daily work by Annemarie Saumweber, a physician assistant in the IMC, who described the diverse and responsible tasks involved in everyday clinical practice. The students were also supervised by Dr. Tobias Högen, senior physician in the ICU.
Career orientation through real-world insights
The excursion underscores the strong practical focus of the Physician Assistant program at HNU. The students benefited from direct interaction with specialists in highly specialized fields such as intensive care medicine and neurorehabilitation and gained realistic insights into clinical processes that go beyond theory. At the same time, the event served as career guidance by demonstrating how Physician Assistants work in interdisciplinary teams.
The excursion was organized by Andreas Röger, himself a Physician Assistant and lecturer in the program: “Such excursions are an important building block for our students to understand the complex processes involved in patient care and to prepare for their future role as Physician Assistants,” he emphasizes.
