HNU students launch self-built rockets

16.07.2025, Study:

Creativity, precision and teamwork were at the centre of an unusual project at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU): students in the sixth semester of the Industrial Engineering and Management course recently successfully launched their self-developed rockets on the grounds behind the HNU.

The event took place as part of the practice-orientated project management module. Sieghard Schmetzer, Business Unit Director at Ingenics AG, led the course in collaboration with Prof Dr Oliver Kunze. Prof. Sven Völker from Ulm University of Applied Sciences, with which HNU offers the degree programme in cooperation, was also present. The aim for the students was to develop functional rockets in small groups, which had to fulfil a number of demanding criteria:

  • The rocket had to reach a minimum flight altitude of 10 metres.
  • The maximum flight altitude had to be precisely measured and documented.
  • The use of pyrotechnics was prohibited - alternative propulsion concepts were required.
  • Self-designed and 3D-printed components had to be integrated.
  • One particular challenge: a raw egg inside the rocket had to survive the flight and landing undamaged.

Various 3D printers were available to the students in the logistics laboratory (LogLab) at HNU. The students received technical coaching from Dr Galiya Klinkova. The rocket launches were eagerly watched by fellow students and lecturers.

"The project combines engineering know-how with entrepreneurial thinking and at the same time promotes creativity and problem-solving skills," explains Prof Dr Oliver Kunze, who supervised the module and was visibly proud of the students. "The results speak for themselves - all the teams worked with great commitment and impressive innovative strength."

With projects like this, HNU is emphasising its claim to combine practical teaching with future-oriented technologies - and to optimally prepare students for the challenges of the working world.

Interested students can still apply for the Industrial Engineering and Management course until 31 August.
