HNU team selected for Bavaria-wide AI learning lab

29.07.2026, University News:

Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) has been selected to participate in the Bavaria-wide AI learning lab with an interdisciplinary team. As part of the programme run by the Research and Innovation Lab for Digital Teaching (FIDL), six challenge teams from Bavarian universities are working together to develop ideas and concepts for higher education teaching in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).

The HNU team comprises Prof. Dr Barbara Brandstetter (Professor of Business Journalism and Head of the Media & User Experience Centre of Excellence and the Media Centre), Prof. Dr Anja Zenk (Professor of English and Head of the Language Centre), Tobias Ademmer (Head of the Centre for Digital Teaching), and a total of five students from Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes.

Focus on AI skills and future skills

The focus of this collaborative work is on how higher education institutions can best prepare students for a world of work shaped by AI. To this end, the HNU team aims to develop new teaching and learning environments in which AI is not only used as a tool but is also subject to critical reflection. The aim is to systematically integrate AI competencies and future skills into courses and to trial innovative assessment formats.

Collaboration within the Bavaria-wide network

As part of the one-year AI Learning Lab, the HNU team is working on its own challenge to further develop AI-supported teaching. At the same time, it forms part of a Bavaria-wide network of six challenge teams who share their experiences, discuss best practice and support one another in developing innovative teaching concepts. The results are intended to help embed AI skills in HNU’s curricula in the long term and to develop teaching in a way that is fit for the future.

Kick-off in Nuremberg

The official launch of the AI Learning Lab will take place from 21 to 23 September 2026 at the Ohm Innovation Centre in Nuremberg. Following this, the six challenge teams will work on their projects through joint working phases and face-to-face meetings until September 2027, sharing their experiences across universities.

About the AI Learning Lab

The AI Learning Lab offers universities in Bavaria a space to experiment with and test innovative concepts for teaching and learning using artificial intelligence. Over the course of a year, interdisciplinary teams comprising lecturers, staff and students work on specific challenges in higher education. The focus is on cross-university exchange, collaborative learning and the development of practical approaches to embed AI skills sustainably in study programmes and teaching.
