Big Data in Logistics, 2017-2021, South Africa

The HNU and University of the Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town / South Africa cooperate in the project "Big Data in Logistics". This project aims to develop a Master's programme "Big Data in Logistics" at UWC.

Health Data Analytics, 2019-2022, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania

This follow-up project to the "Master of Health Information Management" is based on two pillars: 1. establishment of an online Master's programme in Health Data Analytics at the University of the Western Cape and individual modules at Kenya Methodist University and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. 2. conducting summer/winter schools to train HIM alumni and other health professionals in health data analytics.

mango solar, 2019-2020, Kenya

(opens in a new window)

The social startup mango solar is a spin-off project by three HNU alumni. The results of the project are: Development of solar island systems for the rural electrification of underserved regions in sub-Saharan Africa, conception as well as design and programming implementation of the first modules of an industry-specific enterprise resource planning solution, development of digital financing software for end customers, conception and evaluation of innovative business models based on solar energy and mobile applications.

Pathway to Renewable Off-Grid Community Energy for Development (PROCEED), 2019-2022, Namibia

In cooperation with TH Ingolstadt, University of Bayreuth and IBC Solar as well as Namibian partners, the HNU is researching the application of decentralised power grids in Namibia: the path to a sustainable energy supply for remote areas in Namibia.

Strengthening Aquaculture Industry Through Renewable Energies (STAIRE), 2020-2023, Senegal

(opens in a new window)

Fisheries play an important role in Senegal's economy and nutrition. However, due to the unavailability of affordable energy, adequate refrigeration and transport facilities are often lacking. As part of the STAIRE project, an interdisciplinary certificate course is being developed at Université Gaston Berger (UGB) in cooperation with business partners.  Students learn how renewable energy can be used in the fisheries sector through a practice-oriented curriculum.

Further third-party funded projects and programmes

Binational Master Programme "Business Intelligence and Business Analytics" (2016-2022)

(opens in a new window)

Together with the Argentinian Universidad Tecnologica National (UTN), the HNU designed a double-degree programme in the field of business intelligence and business analytics with the aim of training internationally experienced and professionally skilled graduates.

Internationalisation of the administration (2019-2022)

(opens in a new window)

The foreign language competences of administrative staff are to be further developed by means of the StMWK's funding line "Internationalisation of the Administration". In addition to language skills, this also includes intercultural further education and training as well as the translation of administrative materials and templates.

Internationalisation 2.0 (2019-2023)

(opens in a new window)

As part of the "Internationalisation 2.0" funding line of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (StMWK), the two future topics of "digitalisation" and "internationalisation" are linked. With the aim of increasing the mobility of students and employees as well as increasing international visibility, the following measures have been implemented so far in the areas of digital communication and marketing by the International Office: redesign of all websites, introduction of a new website for partners and guests, development of new information material incl. new videos, digitalisation of the German-English welcome brochure for international students, introduction of Worldwide Wednesdays on the HNU's Instagram channel, development of a chatbot that informs students about funding opportunities for their stay abroad.

Support programmes for international mobility

The International Office coordinates various scholarship programmes to support international mobility. Most of the funds are available under the Erasmus+ programme. In addition, the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (StMWK) provides funding to support stays abroad, to award scholarships to international degree-seeking students and to attract international visiting professors. The scholarship and support programme (STIBET) of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) includes scholarships for international students as well as the prestigious DAAD Prize, which is awarded annually for outstanding academic achievements and remarkable social commitment.

Erasmus+ mobility projects with partners outside Europe

For some years now, the Erasmus+ programme has also been able to fund mobility with partner institutions outside Europe. The funds for this must be specifically applied for, and a funding approval distinguishes the project as outstanding. In the reporting period, projects were funded with the following partners:  University of the Western Cape, South Africa (2016-2018), Srinakharinwirot University, Thailand (2016-2018), National University of Science and Technology, Russia (2016-2018), University of Chile (2017-2019), University of the Western Cape, South Africa (2019-2022) and Srinakharinwirot University, Thailand (2019-2022).

Further projects

Introduction of the mobility database "Mobility-Online" (2017-2020)

After 3 years of implementing the core processes of the International Office in the mobility management software "Mobility-Online", students and employees of the HNU and its partner universities worldwide are now guided through their individual stay abroad completely digitally, from the online application for exchange places and scholarships to the preparation and realisation to the completion of the stay abroad. They can obtain detailed information about the partner universities in the integrated search portal (opens in a new window).

In everyday work, the use of Mobility-Online for exchange processing as well as in other areas such as financial management, partner and contact maintenance, statistics or course selection for international exchange students saves a lot of time thanks to automated processes and is also much more sustainable, as there is now almost no paper. As web-based software, Mobility-Online offers all users flexibility in terms of time and location when accessing it.

Research project with Australia: "Fake News"

The Center for Research on Service Sciences (CROSS), in collaboration with the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, is researching how fake news spreads on social media. For this purpose, an experiment was conducted with Facebook users to measure the individually attributed degree of credibility of news based on which actor spreads it.

Study with Australia and the USA: "A comparative Study of EMR Usage in USA and Germany"

The Center for Research on Service Sciences (CROSS), in collaboration with Swinburne University, Melbourne, Australia and the Fielding School of Public Health, UCLA, USA, conducted an extensive data collection in the clinical setting. The evaluation serves a cross-national study (USA and Germany) on usage patterns of digital patient records in hospitals. Recommendations for action are derived from a theory-based analysis of the nature and influence of national, systemic and organisational contexts on usage patterns.

Research project with Spain: "Hurting Others versus Hurting Myself, a Dilemma for Our Autonomous Vehicle" (2017-2019)

Prof. Dr. Oliver Kunze from the HNU, Dr. Miguel Luzuriaga and Dr. Antonio Heras, both from Universidad Complutense Madrid (UCM), Spain, have investigated the "trolley problem (opens in a new window)", a moral decision-making dilemma in autonomous driving, in a joint research project.

Research project with Singapore: "Decarbonisation of urban freight transport with electric vehicles and opportunity charging" (2014-2018)
