Exploring Mobility in Emerging Markets: HNU Students Conduct Field Research in South Africa

16.12.2024, Transfer:

At the end of November 2024, ten students from HNU, enrolled in the International Management Automotive (IMA), Digital Enterprise Management (DEM), and Digital Business Management (DSM) programs, took part in an academic excursion to South Africa. The trip was led by Prof. Dr. Martin Stirzel and Prof. Dr. Jörg-Oliver Vogt and focused on exploring mobility concepts and customer behavior in emerging markets.

The aim of the excursion was to gain first-hand insights into how mobility solutions are shaped by the economic, cultural, and infrastructural context of a rapidly developing country. As part of their project work, students investigated the structure of the South African mobility market, analyzing customer behavior across different demographic and economic segments. Their research sought to understand how mobility services are used, perceived, and adapted in a market characterized by diversity and evolving transportation needs.

A highlight of the program was a visit to the Mercedes-Benz manufacturing plant in East London. There, the students had the opportunity to examine a real-world automotive value chain, observing production processes, supply chain logistics, and quality control mechanisms. This experience offered valuable insight into how global automotive companies operate within the framework of a local economy and adapt to regional market requirements.

Throughout the excursion, students combined academic inquiry with applied field research, benefiting from direct interaction with industry professionals and local stakeholders. The visit also provided a platform for intercultural exchange, enhancing the participants’ understanding of the social and economic factors that influence mobility trends in emerging markets.

This international study trip reflects HNU’s strong emphasis on applied, globally oriented teaching and learning. By embedding practical, real-world experiences into the academic curriculum, HNU prepares its students to engage with complex international challenges and to develop informed, context-sensitive business strategies.
