31.03.2025, Research:

Key security and defence issues were discussed at the second Paris Defence and Strategy Forum (PDSF), which took place under the patronage of French President Emmanuel Macron from 11 to 13 March. The team led by Prof. Dr Marten Risius, Professor of Digital Society and Online Engagement at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU), played a key role in organising the academic symposium on "The Future of War: Cyberattacks, New Conflicts and the Human Frontier".

At the PDSF, over 1,000 experts from the fields of security and defence discussed issues relating to nuclear deterrence, the role of NATO and the EU, new geopolitical, capability-related, industrial and technological topics as well as ethical issues.

About the Academic Symposium co-organised by the HNU

The Academic Symposium on "The Future of War: Cyberattacks, New Conflicts and the Human Frontier" was organised by Prof. Dr Marten Risius, Deinara Jechle, research associate at the Institute for Digital Innovation and the research associates for the field of "Social Media Trust & Safety" Dr Adeline Frenzel-Piasentin, Dr Marco Dürr and Nils Riekers together with scientist Christine Dugoin-Clément and Jason Thatcher, professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. This offered scientists the opportunity to enter into direct dialogue with political and military decision-makers, experts from the defence industry and leading researchers. The aim was to critically examine how the changing tactics of cyber warfare and the use of AI are impacting the nature of conflict and challenging the limits of human involvement and ethical considerations. The HNU researchers also took the opportunity to speak with military and security experts on the research topics they were working on.

About the PDSF

Organised by the French Defence University (ACADEM), the forum is the first large-scale event in France dedicated to defence and security with a strong European focus. It brings together French and international experts from the civil and military sectors in various formats. The conference brings together interdisciplinary perspectives from world-leading academics - particularly, but not exclusively, from the fields of information systems, military decision-making, cyber security and ethics - as well as policy makers to analyse the challenges and opportunities of cyber warfare.
