Recognizing hate speech in an online context with AI
Nils Riekers is a research assistant in the field of “Social Media Trust and Safety” with Prof. Dr. Marten Risius. In his doctoral project, he is investigating AI-based methods for recognizing hate speech in multimodal online content (text, audio, image, video).
The focus is on improving detection performance through model fine-tuning, investigating and developing multi-agent systems for cooperative decision-making and reducing existing biases. Riekers is also researching how hate speech is linked to fake news, disinformation and online extremism in digital communication spaces.
The project should lead to new detection methods, enable a deeper understanding of digital communication dynamics and result in concrete recommendations for action for platform operators, state authorities and civil society organizations.
