Even minor technical glitches in video calls affect the emotions of the participants and have a negative impact on interpersonal relationships. This is suggested by a new study from the US, which was recently published in the renowned journal Nature and sparked debate.
HNU professor Dr. Johannes Basch also examined these research findings—the psychology behind video calls, especially in the context of recruiting, is one of his areas of expertise, on which he regularly publishes.
At the invitation of Deutschlandfunk Kultur, he spoke in a live interview about illusions, imitations, and irritations in video calls, explained the principle of social presence, and highlighted the implications of the study for different contexts.
The business psychologist was also quoted on the subject in the Tagessschau news program. In an article about technical glitches in video calls, he explains the various reasons why poor video quality also has a negative impact on the quality and evaluation of the conversation.
