Founded in 2017, the BayWISS-Verbundkolleg Gesundheit connects scientists at universities of applied sciences (HAWs) and universities in Bavaria who conduct research in the field of health. HNU, one of the four sponsoring universities, hosted this year's network meeting of the college digitally on 27 April 2021.
BayWISS joint doctorate: a productive cooperation between HAWs and universities
With 22 Bavarian HAWs and universities and currently 51 doctoral students, the Verbundkolleg Gesundheit is the Bavarian Science Forum (BayWISS) college with the largest number of members, which promotes cross-university cooperation and doctorates.
"The BayWISS Collaborative Doctorate has achieved the signal effect expected at its inception in every respect," noted the President of HNU, Prof. Dr. Uta M. Feser, in her welcoming speech. She underlined the relevance of the cooperation between universities of applied sciences and universities within the framework of the Bavarian Science Forum, which can be seen, among other things, in the increasing number of members as well as successful and innovative research projects. The added value of the collaborative doctorate will continue even against the background of the planned Higher Education Innovation Act, said the President.
Two doctoral members of the Kolleg presented their research projects at the network meeting. Hildegard Thim (TH Ingoldstadt/TU Munich) presented her project "Method for analysing the need for digitalisation in logistical processes using the example of incoming goods in hospitals". Felix Holl gave an insight into his joint doctorate at HNU and LMU Munich on the topic of "Development of an evaluation framework for mobile applications used in healthcare delivery".
Ethical and legal aspects of research: panel discussion on the role and work of the GEHBa
The professional exchange was continued in a panel discussion on the role of the GEHBa in the Bavarian research landscape. The Joint Ethics Committee of the Bavarian Universities (GEHBa) has set itself the goal of reviewing and evaluating submitted research projects at Bavarian universities on and with humans with regard to ethical and legal aspects. Under the moderation of Prof. Dr. Ernst Tamm, spokesperson of the GEHBa and Vice President for Research and Promotion of Young Researchers at the University of Regensburg, Prof. Dr. Walter Swoboda, Chairman of the GEHBa and Director of the Institute DigiHealth at the HNU, Prof. Dr. Barbara Terborg, head of the Witten Institute for Applied Nursing Science and nursing scientist at HAW Kempten, and Prof. Dr. Karsten Weber, co-director of the Institute for Social Research and Technology Assessment (IST) at OTH Regensburg, discussed the opportunities and challenges of this joint ethics committee.
Doctoral projects as scientific posters: competition for Kolleg doctoral students
The finale of the 4th network meeting was a poster competition. The doctoral students of the BayWISS Collaborative Health Programme had the opportunity to submit a scientific poster on their own research project. A jury reviewed the contributions prior to the event and selected the three best scientific posters. These were presented live at the network meeting and the 49 participants then voted for the best scientific poster. The prize for the best scientific poster went to Dominik Fuchs (HAW Kempten).
PD Dr. Elmar Buchner, member of the steering committee of the Verbundkolleg Gesundheit and deputy head of the Institute DigiHealth at HNU, who led through the event, expressed his sincere thanks for the commitment of all participants. "Even though we were not able to meet today in Illertissen Castle as planned, we have shown that scientific discussion and cross-university networking also work digitally within the framework of our BayWISS Verbundkolleg."
About the Verbundkolleg Health
The Bavarian Science Forum (BayWISS) was founded in 2015 by the Bavarian universities and universities of applied sciences as a communication platform and aims to promote intensified cooperation between the two types of higher education institutions.
An important pillar of the Bavarian Science Forum is the collaborative doctorates, in which the doctoral candidates are supervised by both a university professor and a professor at a university of applied sciences. Eleven collaborative doctoral programmes with different thematic focuses have now been established within the framework of the Expert Forum for Collaborative Doctoral Studies. The Collaborative Research Centre Health, founded in 2017 and based at the University of Regensburg, is the Collaborative Research Centre with the most members.
