Mainframe migration: TTZ Günzburg starts cooperation with BMW Group

20.03.2025, Transfer:

Reducing costs, increasing flexibility and boosting the speed of innovation by migrating mainframe applications: This is what the Technology Transfer Center (TTZ) Günzburg and the BMW Group have set out to do as part of a new cooperation project.

In mainframe migration, historically grown applications and data are transferred from mainframes to modern, more flexible platforms in order to reduce costs and promote innovation. This often goes hand in hand with the migration of legacy code, i.e. the conversion of older code to modern programming languages or frameworks. With its focus on AI and data analytics, the TTZ Günzburg creates ideal conditions for such complex IT projects: Here, practice partners can test AI-based technologies in order to establish future-proof IT structures and expand their competitiveness.

One of these partners is the BMW Group: together with Prof. Dr. Philipp Brune and Selina Lorch, research assistant at the TTZ, it is developing innovative solutions for the modernization of legacy systems. “With this cooperation, we specifically want to accelerate the use of AI in the documentation and conversion of mainframe applications,” explains Florian Rother, responsible for the Mainframe Migration Factory. “Thanks in particular to the relevant expertise of Prof. Dr. Philipp Brune in both mainframe and AI, the TTZ Günzburg offers the ideal platform for this project.”

Together with employees from the BMW Group IT Hub in South Africa, who are supporting the project as developers, the international team first visited the TTZ Günzburg premises. The cooperation partners then held a workshop to determine further steps for their joint work.

“For us at the TTZ, the added value for practice is crucial - this means developing AI-based solutions in close cooperation with our practice partners. Only through direct and continuous exchange can we provide results that are precisely tailored to the specific requirements of the company,” said Prof. Dr. Philipp Brune, Scientific Director of the TTZ Günzburg.
