New impetus for sustainability: HNU launches Sustainability Innovation Circle

28.11.2025, Transfer:

Circularity, impact, resilience, efficiency, and safety: these and other future topics are the focus of the Sustainability Innovation Circle, which was launched by Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU). Around 20 representatives from various companies in the region gathered on November 25 for the kick-off of the innovation circle, which will serve as a platform for exchange, inspiration, and cooperation in the future. In interactive workshops, key topics were identified, initial ideas were exchanged, and the course was set for further joint work.

The guests were welcomed by Prof. Dr. Jens Kolb, Vice President for Transfer and Continuing Education; Ivanka Burger and Tanja Maucher hosted the event. In two specialist keynote speeches, Prof. Dr. Judith Mayer (“The narrative of sustainability put to the test”) and Prof. Dr. Tassilo Schuster (“Between high-tech and hope: Is the smart circular economy realistic?”) provided important food for thought for the subsequent discussions.

Challenges, opportunities, ideas: Kick-off lays the foundation for cooperation

The evening focused on two interactive workshop sessions in which the participants were actively involved. Together, they took stock of the current situation, identified key challenges and areas in need of transformation, and developed possible focal points and exchange formats for the network. Numerous contributions underscored the relevance of regionality, knowledge transfer, and the connection between practice and research.

“Sustainability plays a central role at HNU. With the Sustainability Innovation Circle, we want to put our scientific expertise into practice while also addressing the needs of companies,” explains Prof. Dr. Jens Kolb. “Our goal is to create a space for experience and knowledge that is supported by open exchange, constructive cooperation, and shared ideas.”

Another characteristic feature of the format is its interdisciplinary approach, which also shaped the launch: Researchers from various disciplines contributed different professional perspectives, highlighting the diversity of the initiative.

After a successful start: Sustainability Innovation Circle to be continued

Based on input and feedback from participants, the university is now developing a proposal for the further development of this new transfer format, which takes into account the desire to continue the exchange that has begun and to work together on solutions for sustainable transformation. The HNU sees itself as a catalyst and facilitator that brings together regional actors, promotes dialogue, and contributes new perspectives from research and science.
