Over 6,200 people attended the GG Bavaria Business Day on 28 March in Munich. One of them was Prof Michael Hebel, Professor of Game Art and Design at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU), who was the speaker at a three-part panel discussion.

The conference programme of the GG Bavaria Business Day is aimed at experts from the games industry and offers in-depth insights, networking opportunities and inspiring content relating to the games industry.

Keynote speech by Bavaria's Digital Minister

The Bavarian Minister of State for Digital Affairs, Dr Fabian Mehring, MdL, opened the event with a keynote speech: "For us in Bavaria, games developers are an important economic factor of the future, and we have high expectations for growth. Video games, e-sports and virtual XR worlds are an important part of modern media culture and a highly dynamic, growing economic sector in which we want to play a significant role." At the same time, the Minister is focussing on networking research and teaching on games in Bavaria and is campaigning for a Bavarian Games Institute. In doing so, the games minister is sending a positive signal in response to the demands and efforts of the games professors at HNU to strengthen research and academic teaching institutionally. Further information can be found in the press release of the Bavarian State Ministry for Digital Affairs.

Panel discussion with HNU Professor Michael Hebel

Together with Jane Katsubo, Senior Concept Artist at Larian Studios and Christoph Redl, Hard Surface Artist at Romero Games, Michael Hebel discussed the topic "Game Art: Realities, Skills & Global Perspectives". It was about job profiles, applications and portfolios, working from home and the work mentality in Germany and around the world.

The topic of portfolios for job applications was explored in greater depth in a subsequent seminar: Visitors had the opportunity to show their portfolio to the three game professionals and receive feedback. In addition, various teams presented their current projects in short pitch sessions and received constructive feedback.
