Since 2020, HNU has been pursuing the goal of promoting the mental and physical health of students with its "Healthy University" SGM. Needs-based measures and programmes are derived from student health surveys. The third health survey was conducted in 2025.
Summary from the Vice President and Project Manager
HNU Vice President Prof. Dr Julia Kormann is very pleased about the recognition of the cross-departmental commitment of HNU employees: "Our goal is not only to enable students to study healthily, but also to give them the skills to maintain their physical and mental performance in their later professional life. To achieve this, we are working together at HNU to create an environment that takes a holistic, participatory and forward-looking approach to health promotion."
Project manager Christoph Giebeler added: “The renewed award confirms our strategic path and shows that we are continuously developing. The strong link between teaching and student health management, which we actively practise, is particularly pleasing. Many professors are highly motivated and enjoy promoting the topic of health together with the students.”
Evaluation and degree of target achievement
HNU scored particularly well in the area of participation of status groups. At 92 per cent, it is just above the average of other universities (91 per cent). Students, teaching staff and other university members active in SGM are involved in all relevant processes and decisions and sensitised to the various factors influencing individual health. The Healthy Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences is supported by the Förderverein der Hochschule Neu-Ulm e.V. and the Techniker Krankenkasse.
In the services offered category, the HNU scored 79 per cent, which is well above the average of other universities (71 per cent). The HNU achieved 100 per cent in the sub-areas of internal structures, resources, controlling and sensitisation of teaching staff and other stakeholders as well as project and health communication. The 100 percent score in the sub-category Study-Life-Balance is also particularly pleasing, which is not least due to the individual counselling services offered by the "BIZEPS - Counselling and Information Centre for Parents, Personal and Social Issues". The needs-based programmes range from sports and exercise courses and mental health programmes to a health week and seminars on topics such as stress prevention, resilience and time management.
Outlook: Focus on teaching in motion
In future, the interlinking of teaching and health management is to be further consolidated. In the first half of 2026, for example, HNU is planning a series of workshops on movement-activating teaching. This will be based on the Heidelberg Model of Moving Teaching, an innovative and scientifically sound teaching and learning concept that activates students both physically and cognitively through targeted movement impulses in courses. The network for mental health will also be further consolidated, with the third training programme taking place in October 2025.
