Historic high: HNU starts the winter semester with 4,400 students

01.10.2025, Press Release :

A significant increase despite the G9 gap in Bavaria: Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) recorded 1,150 first-year students and a total of 4,400 enrolled students for the winter semester 2025/26. More than half of them are female and one in five students comes from abroad. Prof. Dr Julia Kormann welcomed the "first-timers" to campus on 29 September. The Bachelor's degree programme in Business Criminology (B.A.) and the "StartSmart@HNU" orientation programme are new.

International, interdisciplinary and intensive practice: whether at the Faculty of Health Management, Information Management or Economics - the professors at HNU prepare students for their professional future with innovative teaching methods and regular practical projects.

Prof. Dr Uta M. Feser, President of HNU, is delighted with the development in student numbers: "The high number of first-year students confirms that our programmes are in tune with the times. Together with our students, we are shaping the future - responsibly, innovatively and always with a practical perspective."

Prof Dr Julia Kormann welcomed the new students and introduced the university and its educational mission. She particularly emphasised the point "responsible action" from HNU's mission statement and encouraged participation in one of the many student initiatives: "Don't just take responsibility for yourself and your studies. Also look to the left and right and help your fellow students - for an appreciative coexistence on campus." Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Bihr, Vice-Rector of Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU), was also on hand to welcome the students from the cooperative degree programmes at HNU and THU.

Personal counselling services, international opportunities and career service

Contact persons from various HNU departments introduced themselves and their services to the students. Marc-Aurel Hensch presented the services offered by the Student Advisory Service, Student Health Management and the Advice and Information Centre for Parents, Personal and Social Affairs (BIZEPS). The latter supports students with personal challenges. Tanja Maucher provided information about the wide range of services offered by the HNU Career Service, which aims to make the transition from studying to working life easier for students. Anna Vander Beken and Katharina Zolotić from the International Office highlighted the many opportunities for international internships or exchange studies at HNU's more than 100 partner universities. Merlin Mößle from the Student Ambassadors presented the support and counselling provided by the Mental Health First Aid team.

Orientation phase

The HNU Student Council (Stuver) organised an extensive programme for first-year students. In addition to the Stuver, the student initiatives Lions Campus Club, ponte consult, Einstein Motorsport, the student ambassadors and HNU eSports as well as HNU facilities presented themselves in the HNU foyer. On the following days, numerous activities took place, such as a traditional Weißwurst breakfast and Kässpätzle meal, guided tours of HNU, a city rally and a freshers' party - where students were able to make their first contacts and get to know the campus.

The programme directors introduced the first-year students to their respective degree programmes. In the cross-degree programme first semester business game, the students each manage a fictitious, profit-oriented company in small teams, work on business management tasks and make decisions. Voluntary preliminary courses in maths and programming rounded off the orientation phase.
