LoRaWAN gateway on the roof: HNU strengthens digital infrastructure in the region

10.12.2025, University News:

Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) is sending a strong signal for the digital future: at the end of November, a gateway for a LoRaWAN network (Long Range Wide Area Network) was installed on the roof of the university. The radio network forms the basis for numerous Industry 4.0 and smart city applications in the region. The HNU is thus creating optimal conditions for practical projects, innovative applications and digital transformation in Neu-Ulm and Ulm.

Stadtwerke Ulm/Neu-Ulm (SWU) is consistently pushing ahead with the expansion of its Internet of Things (IoT) network. The aim is to provide local authorities, companies and educational institutions with a secure and reliable network.

A decisive step: the new gateway on the roof of the HNU uses radio technology that transmits small amounts of data over long distances with minimal energy consumption. The location offers optimal reception conditions for sensors on campus and in the city. This makes the HNU a central hub in the region's digital network.

With the installation of the gateway, HNU and SWU are making an active contribution to regional digitalisation. The cooperation creates a sustainable infrastructure that benefits businesses and local authorities alike.
