Replanting of the forecourt: HNU opts for bee-friendly ornamental apple trees

10.12.2025, University News:

A visual and ecological enhancement: Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) has completely replanted its forecourt, focusing on ecological diversity and a colourful appearance.

In recent years, many of the trees originally planted had suffered damage. The main cause was the location, which no longer offered sufficient space for the roots due to its limited soil. "The trees on the forecourt would have had to be removed anyway, as confirmed by the annual tree inspection," explains Michael Alich, Head of Building Services. "In order to improve the quality of the forecourt and its appearance in the long term, a comprehensive replanting programme was decided upon."

The choice fell on the ornamental apple tree Malus 'Royal Raindrops', a robust and decorative variety that is ideal for urban locations with little soil volume and high sunlight exposure – perfect for the conditions on the university forecourt. The vibrant colours of the flowers harmonise with the HNU's colour scheme and emphasise the modern, friendly design of the campus. At the same time, the new trees make an important contribution to biodiversity: their lush blossoms provide a valuable source of food for bees and other pollinators, while the fruits attract numerous bird species.
