07.05.2026, Study:

With a specialist event featuring a high-calibre line-up, Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) provided a comprehensive insight into the role of a Physician Assistant (PA). Representatives from the fields of education, law and medical practice discussed training pathways, the legal framework and specific career opportunities within this profession, which is becoming increasingly important in the German healthcare system.

Following a welcome address by Prof. Dr Sylvia Schafmeister, Dean of the Faculty of Health Management, Prof. Dr Judith Mantz, Head of the Physician Assistant programme, and Prof. Dr Mona Spiegel presented the PA training programme at HNU and highlighted how practice-oriented and interdisciplinary the course is. Prof. Dr Anna Meinhardt then explained the legal framework for the deployment of Physician Assistants and provided a detailed overview of current developments in healthcare law.

HNU alumnus Dominique Latina provided a particularly vivid insight, reporting on his day-to-day professional life between ward work and general practice. Prof. Dr Verena Christ demonstrated how PAs can be deployed in outpatient medicine using concrete examples from practice.

In the subsequent panel discussion, the opportunities, challenges and future prospects of the profession were discussed in depth. At the closing get-together, numerous guests took the opportunity to exchange ideas and network. The afternoon was rounded off with a guided tour of the DocLab, HNU’s modern simulation and practical training rooms.

The event impressively highlighted just how important the role of the Physician Assistant is for future healthcare provision – and the central role HNU plays in training these specialists.
