From emergency power supplies to lofty heights: HNU students explore the facilities at Ulm University Hospital

When every second counts in a hospital, it’s not just medical procedures that have to run smoothly—the architecture and technology must function seamlessly as well. Students in the Business Studies in Healthcare Management and Physician Assistant programmes at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) got a firsthand look at just how closely these areas are intertwined during a field trip to Ulm University Hospital. As part of the course “Architecture in Healthcare” taught by Prof. Dr. Manja Rausendorf-Marzina, they gained insights into the architectural and technical structures of a modern hospital.

The excursion focused on both theoretical aspects and practical insights into key areas of hospital operations. The head of construction and facilities management at the University Hospital explained to the students the fundamental requirements for the planning, construction, and operation of healthcare facilities. It became clear how legal regulations, safety requirements, and functional processes influence the architectural design.

Special attention was given to the technical systems that ensure the hospital runs smoothly. This included a tour of the emergency power supply, which ensures continuous medical care in the event of an emergency. The students gained a better understanding of the importance of redundant systems and the high standards for operational safety in hospitals.

Another highlight was the visit to the helipad. From lofty heights, it became clear just how complex the structural and safety requirements in hospital construction are. At the same time, the students were treated to an impressive view of the hospital grounds and the surrounding region.
