What was your main motivation to go abroad?
Already in 2022 to 2023, I participated in the Double Degree Programme in Finland and was able to gather many positive experiences there, which motivated me to pursue another semester abroad. I enjoy cultural exchange and believe that studying internationally is enriching. Of course, I also wanted to improve my Spanish language skills, which is why I chose Spain.
Even though there are sometimes difficulties, it is a wonderful time to get to know a new culture, a new language, new people, and new places.
What were your biggest concerns?
I had some concerns regarding the language, as my Spanish was not very good and hardly any English is spoken there. It was a bit of a challenge at first, but over time I managed to communicate well. My language course helped me a lot.
Would you recommend a stay abroad? Why?
Definitely! As mentioned before, this was my second experience abroad and I can therefore highly recommend it. Even though there are sometimes difficulties, it is a wonderful time to get to know a new culture, a new language, new people, and new places. You learn to be even more independent and can gather unforgettable experiences. It is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the life of a foreign country.
What did you learn from your stay abroad?
On the one hand, I of course improved my language skills through the intensive language course and different teaching methods to those used in Germany. On the other hand, I got to experience the Spanish culture in all its aspects. The people here are very warm, loud, and full of joy. The old town offers a cosy atmosphere, and you can go to the beach at any time and watch the beautiful sunsets in the evening. I especially take with me the people's outlook on life, international encounters, and wonderful memories.
Were your expectations met?
Yes and no. I had expected it to be a wonderful time and that I would be able to visit many beautiful places. This definitely turned out to be true, as I was able to go on some unforgettable trips and life on site is also very cosy. There are many activities offered by student organisations, so you can get involved and meet new people. However, I was a little disappointed with my chosen courses, as the level was different from what I had expected. In particular, the level of English is not very good and the grading is quite strict.

Is there anything you would like to highlight about your experience abroad?
It is important not to shy away from unfamiliar situations and to be open to new experiences. I love travelling a lot and getting to know other countries, which is made possible through this opportunity. A semester abroad offers the chance to live on-site and immerse yourself more deeply in the culture. You gain completely new insights and can also grow personally and develop further during this time.

Fun Fact
The Spanish take everything very leisurely, and therefore, many things are simply slower. This starts with walking – so you shouldn’t be in a hurry, and you can immediately tell who is not from Spain. In restaurants, it’s also common to wait longer for your order, and it's best to make yourself known early when you want to pay.
