What was your main motivation to go abroad?

My main motivation for the exchange programme was the desire to experience new cultures, gain more independence, and acquire valuable experiences. Spain has always intrigued me due to my love for the language and culture. The opportunity to apply my Spanish skills in daily life while also improving my English during lectures made it the ideal chance for me to develop my language abilities on multiple levels. Madrid, as a large city, was particularly exciting since I have only lived in smaller cities so far.

The city [Madrid] offers countless activities, an international community, and a unique cultural atmosphere.

What were your biggest concerns?

I had some concerns at first, especially about the organization of the stay and the challenge of embarking on a completely new experience alone. However, the fact that Spain is relatively close to Germany provided me with reassurance. Through thorough planning – particularly the prior approval of courses and early booking of accommodation – I was able to overcome many of my uncertainties and prepare for the new experiences.

Would you recommend a stay abroad? Why?

I would absolutely recommend an exchange programme. The opportunity to experience a new culture, improve one’s language skills, and build international connections is incredibly valuable. The personal development and experiences I gained during my stay make it one of the best decisions of my studies.

What did you learn from your stay abroad?

I made many new friendships, strengthened my linguistic and social skills, and gained insights into a different academic culture. The experience showed me how important f lexibility and initiative are, especially when dealing with organisational challenges. Additionally, I learned how to live independently and efficiently in a vibrant city like Madrid.

Fun Fact

Did you know that you can find yourself right in the middle of Spain if you go to Madrid? In the famous Puerta del Sol square, there is a plaque on the ground that marks kilometre 0 of all the roads in Spain. It is located just outside the main entrance to the Real Casa de Correos - the very centre of the country!

Were your expectations met?

My expectations were largely met. I was able to significantly improve my language skills, complete valuable academic courses, and experience life in a bustling metropolis. However, some organisational challenges, high living costs, and cultural differences posed a slight challenge. These, however, could be overcome through flexibility, careful planning, and an open-minded approach.

Is there anything you would like to highlight about your experience abroad?

The diversity and vibrancy of Madrid are something I would particularly like to highlight. The city offers countless activities, an international community, and a unique cultural atmosphere. Additionally, the opportunity to easily visit other Spanish cities enriched my stay. Despite the challenges in the organisational area, the experience was overwhelmingly positive and significantly contributed to my personal development. I gained not only more independence but also the ability to navigate new situations, understand different perspectives, and push the boundaries of my comfort zone.
