What was your main motivation to go abroad?

My main motivation emerged right at the beginning of my time at the HNU: ever since the introductory event of the International Office, the idea of taking part in a staff mobility programme has never left my mind. As I have always had a great passion for languages, I found the language course opportunities particularly appealing. When I then discovered that language trips to Barcelona were even being offered, I was immediately enthusiastic and simply could not pass up such an opportunity.

It is a great privilege to experience the many different facets of a country first-hand and to get to know its culture and people at close quarters.

Did you have any concerns?

I did not really have any concerns, although a certain level of nervousness naturally comes with stepping outside your comfort zone and getting involved in something unfamiliar. Shortly before the trip started, I did wonder whether my level of Spanish would be sufficient for the course and whether I would be able to communicate well in general while I was there. Organisationally, however, I had no worries at all, as both the travel organisers and the International Office supported me very well throughout.

Would you recommend going abroad? Why?

Definitely! You not only develop professionally — in my case particularly in terms of language skills — but also personally. It is a great privilege to experience the many different facets of a country first-hand and to get to know its culture and people at close quarters.

Fun Fact

Barcelona is laid out in “cuadras”, or blocks, which makes it ideal for sightseeing even if you do not have a great sense of direction. :)

What did you gain from your stay abroad?

I experienced Barcelona as a city that captivates with its impressive Gaudí-inspired architecture, a daily rhythm that only really begins at 10 in the morning, incredibly good food on every corner, and a fascinating mix of history, tradition, and modern lifestyle. I also came away from the experience realising that the past tenses of the subjunctive and I will probably never become friends in this lifetime. :)

The Sagrada Família, with the tallest church tower in the world, which surpassed Ulm Minster at the end of last year.

Were your expectations met?

Yes, my expectations were more than fulfilled. That week was a truly enriching experience for me, and I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to take part in it.

Is there anything you would like to highlight about your experience abroad?

Yes, there is definitely one thing I would like to highlight: it is well worth skipping public transport from time to time and exploring the city on foot instead. That way, you experience the city much more intensely, discover hidden alleyways and cosy little bars, and can recharge with a café con leche along the way. Comfortable shoes are definitely recommended, though.
