As the largest industry gathering in the German-speaking world, this year's Geothermal Energy Congress (DGK) in Frankfurt am Main from 18 to 20 November 2025 offered a wide range of presentations and workshops on topics related to economics and research, near-surface, medium-depth and deep geothermal energy. The DGK is organised by the German Geothermal Association (BVG) and brings together participants from business, politics, administration and science every year to network and promote exchange between science and industry.
Focus: Social acceptance of geothermal energy in regional policy and the economy
As a low-emission, renewable energy source, geothermal energy is becoming increasingly important in the German heat transition, especially in municipal heat planning. Social acceptance plays a decisive role in the successful implementation of geothermal projects – a topic that Robin Renoth is addressing in his doctoral thesis. At the German Geothermal Energy Congress, he presented a case study that he is conducting as part of his research project together with Dr Martin Schmieder (HNU), Prof. Dr Michael Drews (TU Munich), Prof. Manfred Plechaty (HNU) and Prof. Dr Elmar Buchner (HNU). The study focuses on small towns as a type of community that is of particular research interest, as around 30 per cent of the German population lives in such a structure. The study focuses on regional policy and local businesses as relevant actors in this environment.
Beyond Illertissen: a positive contribution to municipal heat planning in Germany
Renoth uses guided interviews for his qualitative case study, with the municipality of Illertissen serving as an exemplary small town. In addition to the fundamental perspectives of the stakeholders, he examines the respective opportunities and risks identified by the interviewees and outlines initial approaches to solutions. Among other things, great importance is attached to open, transparent communication and the active, early involvement of various stakeholders.
Beyond the specific case study, the analysis provides valuable insights into the social challenges and opportunities associated with the introduction of geothermal projects in small towns. Renoth's research thus forms a basis for future independent and scientifically sound recommendations for action.
