The Smart Doorbell goes beyond conventional smart home systems: instead of providing a live video connection, it captures an image of the person at the door every time the doorbell rings. An integrated AI model analyzes the recordings, identifies known visitors, and documents the frequency of visits. New people can be added, and existing entries can be edited or deleted.
Focus on data protection and transparency
Special attention is paid to data protection: instead of storing image and video data in cloud services provided by external providers, the Smart Doorbell processes all data locally on the device or in the private network. This means that no personal information is passed on to third parties and there is no dependence on internet connections or external servers. This consistent local data processing offers significantly higher protection against unauthorized access and complies with the principles of data minimization and informational self-determination.
Students actively shape innovation
An important part of the project is the involvement of students. A student assistant played a key role in the design and technical implementation. The TTZ Günzburg thus specifically promotes the transfer of practical knowledge and creates valuable learning and development opportunities in the field of applied research.
Technology offers wide-ranging applications
The underlying technology of the “Smart Doorbell” offers potential far beyond the private sphere, for example for companies, educational institutions, or public facilities. In the next project phases, TTZ will further investigate the fields of application and continue to develop the technology in a targeted manner.
