Spotlight on AI: HNU Research Professor Serves as Judge at HealthCare Hackathon

09.04.2026, Research:

Developing digital solutions to real-world problems in everyday medical practice within just 48 hours as part of interdisciplinary teams: That was the goal of the 3rd Healthcare Hackathon, which took place in Würzburg from March 26 to 27, 2026. As a jury member, HNU Research Professor Dr. Johannes Schobel evaluated the teams, which focused primarily on AI-based solutions for this year’s challenges.

In eleven different challenges, the approximately 40 participants—including medical professionals, IT specialists, nurses, and students—worked on innovative solutions to improve medical care and research at the University Hospital of Würzburg (UKW). This year, the focus was clearly on artificial intelligence: using AI, the teams were tasked with developing, among other things, a tool for optimizing medical exam questions (“SmartExam”), a system for assessing the progression of skin tumors (“SkinStager”), and an emergency room simulation (“AI-mergency Room”).

First place went to Team CareTechCollective for their project “LabEfficient,” which simplifies the interpretation of external lab results; they were followed by Team Helix with “SkinStager.” Third place went to Team Krankenkassen-Codierer for “NutriCare Pediatric Oncology,” which aids in the early detection of malnutrition in children with cancer.

Jury work and professional exchange

Through his involvement in the Healthcare Hackathon, Prof. Dr. Johannes Schobel is actively supporting the development of innovative solutions for the healthcare system. “The event offers an ideal platform for showcasing new approaches—particularly in the field of AI—and for working together to advance the healthcare system,” says the research professor, who himself conducts research in the field of digital medicine and care at the DigiHealth Institute at HNU. As a jury member, he not only evaluated the participants’ pitches and results, but also took the opportunity to talk with the teams and discuss the practical implementation of digital applications in the healthcare context.
