Bavarian Vice Presidents for Teaching visit the HNU

24.07.2025, University News:

Exchange on current challenges, internationalisation and innovative teaching: On 21 July 2025, Prof. Dr Julia Kormann, Vice President for Teaching at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU), welcomed eleven vice presidents for teaching from Bavarian universities to the campus for an intensive exchange. The all-day event provided space for discussions on current challenges in university teaching, strategic developments and new impulses for practice.

At the beginning, the participants began by sharing news from their universities in a lightning round and discussing key challenges in the higher education sector. The focus was on the topic of "profile and concentration" - a strategic approach to sharpening university profiles in Bavaria.

Impulses from practice - for teaching, inclusion and internationalisation

Later in the morning, Jens Renner, Head of the Library at the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (FHWS), gave a presentation on how libraries can actively support teaching and act as didactic partners. Prof Dr Dietmar Wolff from Hof University of Applied Sciences shed light on the sensitive area of compensating for disadvantages caused by long-term illnesses - a topic that is becoming increasingly important.

After the lunch break, the focus turned to internationalisation: Prof. Dr. Marcus Herntrei from Deggendorf Institute of Technology (THD) spoke about dealing with international degree-seeking students and the associated opportunities and challenges.

Prof. Dr. László Kovács from Augsburg University of Applied Sciences (THA) then discussed Bernhard Pörksen's book "Die große Gereiztheit" (The Great Irritation) - a critical look at social communication, polarisation and the role of universities in public discourse.

Insights and conclusion

Finally, Prof Dr Julia Kormann gave the guests a tour of the HNU laboratories and offered them an insight into current research and teaching projects. After the visit to the HNU, all participants were invited to experience the traditional Schwörmontag in Ulm together - which rounded off the day in a convivial atmosphere.
