Under the guidance of professors Dr. Dany Meyer and Dr. Erica Weilemann, the students first worked out the basics and then implemented a functional system consisting of hardware, software, and cloud connectivity. They were assisted by two teams of students: tutors who provided their specialist and technical knowledge (Charlotta Utzler, Anika Starcke, Jennifer Bell, Patrizia Kienzle, and Tabea Stabenow); and secondly, students who, together with Magdalena Fremdling, scientific advisor for equality at HNU, promoted team development among the participants (Maren Zanner, Jenny Huynh, and Julia Hosch).
Summer Lab strengthens enthusiasm for development and spirit of experimentation
The students then presented their project results to parents and guests. One participant summed up the experience particularly positively: “What I liked best was that we had a lot of freedom in developing our devices and were able to experiment a lot.”
The project also attracted media attention: Regio TV reported on the Summer Lab in its Schwaben Journal program on August 8, 2025. HNU student and tutor Anika Starcke appeared as an interview partner and ambassador for the promotion of women in digitalization.
The Girls @ HNU Summer Lab is part of the gender equality initiatives at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences, which are overseen by Prof. Dr. Claudia Kocian-Dirr. The aim of the work is to promote women in science and the arts in the long term and, in particular, to strengthen their digital participation. In October 2025, Prof. Dr. Kocian-Dirr will hand over her position as equal opportunities officer to a colleague and will once again focus more on her research and teaching in the field of business informatics.
The next edition of the Summer Lab is planned for August 2026.
