Over a total of five rounds, first-year students at HNU and those on the joint degree programme with Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU) analysed key financial indicators relating to the sale of electric scooters. Based on this data, they developed strategies designed to boost the company’s success and outperform the competition. Participation is compulsory for all first-year Bachelor’s students – the only exception being the Physician Assistant programme.
The teams were deliberately made up of students from different disciplines. This allowed new connections to form early on, and the participants benefited from a variety of perspectives and experiences. The groups were supported by tutors throughout the game.
Awards for the most successful groups
At the end of the two-day simulation, the teams that had achieved the highest turnover were honoured in the lecture theatre. They received various prizes, including vouchers for group activities. The business simulation was organised and run by Prof. Dr Barbara Dannenmann, Prof. Dr Stefan Distel and Prof. Dr Marlon Füller from the Faculty of Economics.
Further technical and pedagogical development of the simulation game
Over the past few semesters, we have worked intensively with the developers to ensure the technical robustness and stability of the software. The result is a powerful, pedagogically enhanced learning module that integrates theory and practice even more closely. In addition to traditional lecture elements, this summer term has seen increased use of deliberate changes in media, which appeal to different learning styles through shorter, varied sessions. These include the hyper-realistic avatars Marlon, Stefan and Barbara, who proved their worth as an innovative and effective teaching tool last term.
“We are continuously developing the business simulation at HNU – both technologically and pedagogically. Our aim is to make learning practical and interactive, whilst ensuring it remains robust and reliable,” explains Prof. Dr Stefan Distel.
Elements of so-called ‘active teaching’ will be used even more strategically in future to promote engagement, interaction and long-term learning success. Another new feature is a dedicated slot on the topic of mental health. In this way, the project recognises the growing importance of this issue in everyday student life.
“Mental health is a key prerequisite for sustainable learning success. The fact that we are now consciously making space for this area sends an important signal,” explains Prof. Dr Marlon Füller.
One of the key innovations is the integration of an AI-powered chatbot provided by the manufacturer. This chatbot answers technical questions immediately and in a way that is tailored to the target audience – particularly with regard to the needs of Generation Z. Terms such as ‘prohibitive price’ can be explained directly within the chat, without students having to spend time searching through documents. This saves time and enhances the efficiency of the learning process.
“With the AI bot, we are creating easy access to complex specialist content. Students receive answers they can understand straight away and can focus more on putting the knowledge into practice,” adds Prof. Dr Barbara Dannenmann.
