What was your main motivation to go abroad?

I definitely wanted to gain experience abroad during my studies in order to get to know new people and cultures. I deliberately chose Belgium because the country is geographically close, but is often not known at all for its diversity. I also found the idea of studying at another university and getting to know new learning methods and perspectives there exciting.

Mechelen is compact yet lively, and therefore ideal for students.

What were your biggest concerns?

As my stay came about at rather short notice, my biggest concern at first was not finding suitable accommodation. Fortunately, the university supported me greatly with this. We regularly received information about trustworthy student residences and helpful details about the relevant portals. I was also somewhat nervous about making new contacts, as this meant stepping out of my comfort zone. However, thanks to the dedicated student representation and the many introductory events, it ultimately became very easy for me to settle in and meet people.

Would you recommend a stay abroad? Why?

Absolutely! I feel that Belgium is often underestimated. Although it is a small country, there are an incredible number of places worth seeing, cultural highlights and charming cities that can be reached quickly by train. Each city has its own distinct character, and everywhere you can feel the openness and hospitality of the people.

What did you take away from your time abroad?

As it was my first experience abroad, my time in Mechelen above all made me more independent and confident. I learned to find my way in a new environment, to approach others and to handle challenges with composure. I also learned a great deal about intercultural collaboration, both in my studies and in everyday life.

Fun Fact

In Belgium, people ride their bikes in any weather—period. Rain, wind, hail? Nobody here cares. And actually, it doesn’t rain nearly as often as the country’s reputation might suggest.

Were your expectations met?

Yes, absolutely. I moved to Mechelen with relatively few preconceptions and could not have chosen a more beautiful city. Mechelen is compact yet lively, and therefore ideal for students. There are many cosy bars, cultural events and lovely cafés. If you ever miss big city life, Antwerp or Brussels can be reached by train in just 15 minutes. The professors are also friendly and helpful. They treat students as equals and help them to choose courses that truly match their own interests.

Is there anything you would like to highlight about your experience abroad?

I was surprised at how quickly I felt at home in Mechelen. The city has a warm, open atmosphere that makes it easy to form new friendships and feel inspired. What particularly delighted me was that you encounter creative people and their work everywhere. At markets, in food halls and at city festivals, you meet talented artists with whom you can immediately strike up a conversation. These encounters inspired me greatly.
