HNU review of the year 2024

A very special year is drawing to a close on the Wiley campus: Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences has turned 30 years old. In the HNU annual review, we look back on the most important moments, projects and successes that have shaped our university's anniversary year.

The year in facts and figures

  • 117.740

    clicks were recorded by the HNU Library's YouTube tutorials this year. 

  • 31.813

    Zoom meetings took place: 182,988 participants spoke to each other on the video communication platform for a total of 9,655,826 minutes.

  • 22.048

    items were borrowed from the HNU library in 2024. 

  • 13.667

    portions of chips and wedges went over the counter in the canteen in 2024.

  • 7.130

    customers used the HNU library this year, including 1,837 new customers.

  • 2.350

    new e-books were added to the HNU library collection.

  • 1.775

    people started studying at HNU in the summer and winter semesters. 

  • 1.038

    e-learning courses were completed at HNU in 2024.

    6 people completed a postgraduate course, and more than 100 people successfully completed one of the AI postgraduate programs at HNU.

    6 publications by HNU scientists were recorded in the publication database E-Prints in 2024 - 91 of them in the peer review process. (Status: 5.12.24)

    HNU students spent a semester abroad. A further 17 students completed an internship abroad.

    is the number of different nationalities among HNU students.

    International Exchange Students were guests at HNU for one or two semesters.

    new employees in science and administration started at HNU in 2024.

Did you know...?

Every year, the Neu-Ulm University Prize of the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences Sponsoring Association is also awarded at the graduate gala. This year, Lisa Steurer, a graduate of the Information Management and Corporate Communication (IMUK) course, received it for her Bachelor's thesis.  By the way: The Sponsoring Association also turned 30 this year!

January 2024

HNU launches campaign against skills shortage

In January, the “l(i)ebenswerte Region” website was launched with an accompanying social media campaign. With this campaign, HNU is counteracting the shortage of skilled workers in the region: it shows the attractiveness of the region around Neu-Ulm, Ulm and Biberach an der Riß as a place to live and work.

Project for intelligent fall detection wins DATIpilot Innovation Sprint

The “stand-by.care” project takes the safety of older people in their own homes to a new level - with an adapter system for household appliances that makes emergencies recognizable. Prof. Dr. Johannes Schobel and his team won the DATIpilot Innovation Sprint competition in February with this idea.

HNU team takes part in the Smart Green Island Makeathon on Gran Canaria

Interdisciplinary work on innovative solutions for current challenges: That was the aim of the Smart Green Island Makeathon 2024, in which an HNU team developed AI-supported solutions and initiated student exchanges with the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Bavarian-Swabian universities award the Transfer 2024 innovation prize

In April, the universities of Augsburg, Kempten and Neu-Ulm awarded their 15,000 euro Transfer Innovation Prize at the Vöhlinschloss in Illertiss. Among the HNU projects, an initiative for digital transformation won the race.

HNU's AI Transfer Plus regional center opens

Bringing AI to companies - that is the goal of the newly launched AI Transfer Plus Regional Center North Swabia at HNU. It was officially opened in May with a visit from the Bavarian State Minister for Digital Affairs, Dr. Fabian Mehring, to the Technology Transfer Center (TTZ) in Leipheim.

Daniel Gastl speaks at the HNU Management Forum

Daniel Gastl is bringing the topic “Mergers & Acquisitions in SMEs using the example of the bank merger of Sparkasse Schwaben-Bodensee and Günzburg-Krumbach” to the Management Forum at HNU in June. In his presentation, the Chairman of the Board of Sparkasse Günzburg-Krumbach will shed light on the motives, the process and the success factors of company mergers. 

July 2024

HNU creates a hub for artificial intelligence with AI Hub

Shaping the future - discovering AI: this is the motto under which HNU is founding a new contact point for companies and those interested in studying and further education in the field of artificial intelligence in July. The AI Hub brings together AI stakeholders, bundles AI activities and promotes the topic in research, teaching and knowledge and technology transfer.

HNU students design accessible website for Nivea

A new edition of a proven cooperation: under the motto “Nivea is for everyone”, HNU students on the Information Management and Corporate Communication (IMUK) course are developing concepts for an accessible Nivea website. The aim was to enable people with disabilities to find and order functional accessories for various products.

September 2024

HNU celebrates its 30th anniversary with speeches, food trucks and a fire show

 “30Y HNU - HNU connects” - with over 350 guests, HNU brings its anniversary motto to life at the big celebration in September. Numerous employees and students, partners from the regional university landscape and business as well as guests from the world of politics celebrate the university's 30th anniversary together.

TTZ in Leipheim is opened with Minister President Söder and Minister of State Blume 

Smart, smarter, TTZ Smart Production and Logistics: Bavaria's Minister President Dr. Markus Söder and Markus Blume, Bavarian Minister of State for Science and the Arts, open HNU's Technology Transfer Center in Leipheim in October.

Vöhlinschloss University School Center celebrates its 15th anniversary

Under the leadership of HNU, the Swabian universities of Augsburg, Kempten and Neu-Ulm have been using the now 500-year-old Renaissance castle for seminars, training courses and conferences since 2009. The castle has now become an integral part of academic education and training, practical research and networking between science and business.
