Teaching assignment at HNU

From professional practice to the lecture hall

Assistant lecturers at Neu-Ulm University are external, part-time specialists with practical experience who teach individual courses on a fee-paying basis, sharing their knowledge and experience of their day-to-day professional lives and the demands of their work with students – a great benefit for both sides.

FAQ

What is the scope of a teaching assignment?

Teaching assignments are usually awarded for one semester. The module handbook for the relevant degree programme specifies the number of weekly contact hours (SWS) to be delivered, each lasting 45 minutes. These are mainly between 2 and 4 SWS and take place weekly during the semester over a period of approximately 14 weeks on fixed days of the week.

Any deviations, such as block courses, online elements, excursions, etc., must be discussed with the module coordinator and the administration.

What duties are involved in a teaching assignment?

As an assistant lecturer, you are required to carry out the teaching duties specified in your teaching contract. You will work independently and be responsible for designing the content of your courses.

First, you will discuss a concept for your lecture with the module coordinator. In doing so, you must take into account the module description for the course, which sets out the required content.
However, you are free to develop your own teaching approach – you can set your own priorities or adapt content to current developments. You decide for yourself which teaching methods you wish to use to convey the material: you can combine lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions or even field trips within the allocated timeframe, in consultation with the module coordinators.

You are responsible for preparing teaching materials such as presentations, reading lists or lecture notes. If the module handbook specifies exams, you must set and mark these yourself.

You can find the module descriptions in the download section of the individual degree programme pages. You can find out the course size from the professors responsible for the module.

How many teaching assignments can be awarded to an individual?

Assistant lecturers may not exceed a total of 9 contact hours per week per semester at state universities in Bavaria. Teaching assignments are often awarded for two consecutive terms and, depending on the reason for the award or the amount of preparation required, may be awarded more frequently.

What is the remuneration for teaching assignments?

Teaching assignments are usually awarded for a period of one semester and paid at the end of that period. Remuneration is calculated on the basis of the actual number of eligible teaching hours delivered. For each contact hour delivered, you will receive a flat-rate payment which already includes preparation and follow-up work, as well as the examination tasks for a course or semester hour. Time spent invigilating examinations cannot be taken into account in this calculation.

What are the requirements for guest lectures?

As a university of applied sciences, we naturally place great importance on maintaining an ongoing dialogue with businesses. Through guest lectures at our faculty, you can present information about your work and new projects, report on current developments in your industry, introduce new methods or software systems, for example, and discuss the latest challenges in your field.

Guest lectures can be held as part of regular lectures, provided they are relevant to the course content and its target student audience. These should be limited to 60 to 90 minutes; depending on the topic, companies may also deliver a full 180-minute lecture.

Please note that a guest lecture is not a platform solely for advertising your own company or recruiting students as interns or employees. For this purpose, we offer, for example, our Internship and Job Board or the Career Weeks in October.

You can find the programme directors as your points of contact on the HNU programme pages.
