Overview of tasks

Teaching

  • Creating practical courses for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes
    (typically 18 contact hours per week for a full-time professorship)
  • Individual learning support through teaching in small groups
  • Supervision of project work, practical placements and final theses

You will receive targeted support in the further development of your teaching: the Centre for Digital Teaching advises professors on pedagogical issues and on the use of innovative digital teaching and assessment formats.

Research

  • Development and implementation of independent research projects
  • Research with measurable social or economic benefits
  • Academic exchange, collaborations and publications

HNU’s research profile, its laboratories and its research and transfer institutions provide an insight into the research landscape and academic focus of HNU.

Professors receive support in particular with financial planning, the selection of suitable funding schemes and the application process – from the initial project idea through to submission.

Transfer

  • Collaboration with businesses, start-ups, public authorities and social stakeholders
  • Development of practical solutions and application-oriented projects
  • Involvement of external partners in teaching, research and degree programmes

International Teaching & Research

The professors at HNU are based in one of three scientific departments, each with a distinct profile and a strong practical focus. In addition, they contribute their expertise to part-time study and continuing education programmes through the Centre for Postgraduate and Professional Studies.

Requirements & Appointment process

Formal employment requirements

To be appointed to the HNU, the legal requirements set out in Section 57 of the Bavarian Higher Education Act (BayHIG) must be met. These include, in particular:

  • A completed university degree
  • Particular aptitude for academic or artistic work (usually a PhD or equivalent academic achievements)
  • Teaching aptitude, e.g. based on teaching experience – such as in a lecturing role (More information on teaching assignments at HNU)
  • At least five years of professional experience after your first university degree, at least three of which must have been outside a university

Professional and personal skills

In addition to the formal criteria, the following aspects are particularly important:

  • Professional suitability for the advertised professorship and a strong practical focus
  • Ability to convey content in a clear, practical and pedagogically sound manner
  • Ability to cooperate and communicate, as well as a willingness to contribute to teaching, research and university development
  • The specific subject areas of focus and requirements are described in detail in the individual job advertisements

Note for international applicants

Additional legal requirements apply for permanent civil service employment in Bavaria. These include, amongst others:

  • Citizenship of an EU or EEA member state (or recognised professional qualifications from third countries)
  • German language skills at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
