Three trainees – lots of insights: This is how an apprenticeship works at HNU

10.11.2025, University News:

A tour of the university administration departments: Three apprentices are currently employed at HNU: Elis Neigum, in her third year of training, Mathilda Modl, in her second year, and Elvedin Kuka, in his first year. During their apprentice, the trainees at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) pass through numerous departments such as finance, purchasing, human resources, facility management, legal, event management, marketing and communications. They also gain insights into the Centre for IT and Digitalisation (ZID) and the library – a comprehensive look behind the scenes of the university organisation.

"HNU not only trains students, but also tomorrow's specialists for its own administration," says Tanja Wanner, Deputy Head of Human Resources Management and Development. She supervises the apprentices and draws up training plans, for example.

What the apprentices really like

What I appreciate most about HNU is the friendly atmosphere and the support I receive from my colleagues. You feel like part of the team right from the start. I particularly like the fact that I can try out different areas at HNU and find out exactly what suits me best, says Elis Neigum, who will complete her shortened training programme in February 2026.

Mathilda Modl likes best that she felt warmly welcomed right from the start and was immediately integrated into the HNU team: "The diversity of the departments gives me insights into very different areas of the working world. I'm not only learning a lot about different work processes, but also about myself – especially where my strengths lie and in which environment I feel most comfortable.

Elvedin Kuka mentioned similar points: "What I like most about the training at HNU is that everyone is very friendly and you get the feeling that you belong and are not just the 'trainee'. In addition, they are always willing to help with any questions, which I think is great.

Who the apprentices would recommend training at HNU to

Elis Neigum recommends studying at HNU to anyone who likes to work independently, wants to take on responsibility and enjoys working with lots of different people. Mathilda Modl adds: "I would recommend HNU to anyone who is responsible, team-oriented and eager to learn. People who value a harmonious and respectful working environment where they are supported and encouraged are particularly well suited here.
