Practical insights into orthopaedic technology for student physician assistants

30.06.2026, Study:

Modern aids for acute and chronic conditions: Fourth-semester students on the Physician Assistant programme at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) learnt first-hand how patients’ quality of life can be improved. During the lecture on Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery given by Prof. Dr Liesa Schiefele, orthopaedic technician Hannah Weinmann and orthopaedic technician and bandager Dominik Mahlmeister from the Häussler medical supply shop provided an overview.

Using numerous practical examples, the two guests presented modern prostheses, orthoses and other assistive devices used in the treatment of orthopaedic, trauma and neurological conditions. This gave the students an insight into the wide range of treatment options offered by modern orthopaedic technology and its importance for patient care.

The presentation was made particularly vivid by the assistive devices brought along, which the students were able to try out for themselves. This allowed them to experience first-hand how the various treatment solutions work and the benefits they offer.

In addition to technical content, the speakers also provided valuable insights into the interdisciplinary collaboration between medical institutions, orthopaedic technology and patients. The event demonstrated how important the combination of theory and practice is for the training of prospective physician assistants.
