HNU participated in nationwide awareness campaign for the disease ME/CFS

About the disease

According to estimates by the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV), around 620,000 people in Germany suffer from this currently incurable multisystemic disease, which is often caused by a viral infection. Despite the high number of people affected and the severity of the disease, it is still largely unknown.

60 to 75 per cent of those affected are unable to work, while 25 per cent are bedridden or housebound. Many sufferers require care, are severely disabled and often face stigmatisation.

Solidarity with those affected in the university community

"By participating in #LightUpTheNight4ME, we have set an example of solidarity with those affected and their families," said President Prof Dr Uta M. Feser. Christoph Giebeler, Head of the BIZEPS Family and Social Counselling Centre at HNU, added: "Our participation in the campaign is an expression of our deep solidarity with those affected within our university family. At HNU, we are committed to inclusive coexistence on campus and support our employees even in difficult times." HNU employee Michaela Wolf, whose husband has ME/CFS, also emphasised this: "I am very grateful to have an employer that supports me in the challenges that come with caring for an affected family member."
