SUAVIA becomes new cooperation partner in the Physician Assistant degree programme at HNU

11.03.2026, Press Release :

On 3 March 2026, Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) and SUAVIA (formerly Kreisspitalstiftung) entered into a strategic partnership for the Bachelor's degree programme in Physician Assistant (B.Sc.). With this partnership, both institutions are strengthening the practical training of prospective physician assistants and at the same time making an important contribution to regional healthcare. The cooperation will include clinical placements, practical training components and closer integration of scientific teaching and clinical practice. SUAVIA is already the 15th cooperation partner in the degree programme.

The Physician Assistant programme qualifies students to support medical teams in clinics and practices at a high professional level and to take on delegable medical tasks responsibly. It teaches medical basics, clinical examination techniques, diagnostics and therapy assistance, as well as skills in communication, healthcare and interprofessional collaboration. Students benefit from a training concept that combines sound theory with practical skills right from the start. Two compulsory clinical placements in internal medicine and surgery, as well as a practical year, form central components of the curriculum.

HNU President Prof. Dr Julia Kormann emphasised the importance of the cooperation: “HNU sees itself as a welcoming university with a growing reputation that extends far beyond the region. Specialised degree programmes such as Physician Assistant attract people from a large geographical area. We are working to retain these talents in the region in the long term. For us, science is not an ivory tower, but an attitude: we apply scientific methodological competence – in interaction with politics, business and civil society.”

Practical relevance at the heart of the programme

Prof. Dr. med. Mona Spiegel, practical training coordinator for the degree programme, also emphasised how important strong partners are for practical training: “To train our students, we need facilities that enable high-quality, qualifying training. SUAVIA complements our offering perfectly. Students learn by working with patients – and for this we rely on partners in the region. Four students are already starting their practical phase this year and the first clinical traineeship contracts have been signed.”

SUAVIA: A practice partner with tradition, responsibility and the courage to break new ground

With SUAVIA, HNU gains a partner that is deeply rooted in the region and can look back on centuries of history. Managing Director Torsten Strehle emphasises this unique perspective: "Our history goes back 555 years – that makes us 300 years older than Charité. We feel the immediate impact of political decisions in the healthcare sector. That is precisely why cooperation with other players in the global arena, and especially those involved in scientific work in the healthcare sector, is so important. The collaboration with HNU is a matter close to our hearts. We appreciate the agility of a university of this size and the courage to break new ground together."

Dr Michael Glück, Medical Director of SUAVIA, added: “As healthcare providers, we benefit from scientific expertise – and we gain motivated young talent. It is very important to us to be able to teach young people skills and competencies. We are proud that we were able to get this cooperation off the ground together in such a short time. As a lecturer in the Physician Assistant programme, I am particularly pleased about the close connection between practice and science.”
